What does it mean to be an Abolitionist?-
To be an abolitionist is to be someone who is for abolishing slavery. It means you don't agree with it and u think it should not be there. Huck is afraid of being called this because people will start to think that he is the one who set Jim free and he could be punished.

Chapters 12-16
Jim reaction to King Solomon story-
Two women had given birth to children. In the night one woman set her baby far away from her so that she wouldn't roll over her child in the middle of the night. The second women left her baby near her and rolled over and killed in it the night. The foolish lady who had killed her child claimed that the wise lady's child was her own. When they talked to King Solomon about it he suggested that they cut the child in half and give one half to the first lady and one to the second. The foolish woman did not protest toward cutting the child in half, while the other lady did. The wide lady asked him to spare the life of the child and to just give him to the other lady. King Solomon decided that the child was the wise lady's because no mother would ever let their child die. The way Jim reacts to the story is pretty funny. He thinks everyone is a fool for wanting to cut a baby in half. Huck try's to convince him differently but he doesnt succeed.

Jims reaction to being separated in the fog-
When Jim found out that Huck was playing a joke on him he reacted very badly . Jim was very upset with Huck because he was very worried and thought he lost Huck. He had already thought he lost him once and didn't wanna loose him again. Jim's reaction showed how much he cared about Huck and how much he hated being made a fool out of. Since he was uneducated slave he probably has was made a fool out of a lot, but since it was by Huck, it was even worse, because Jim cares about Huck a lot. At this point I feel bad for Jim because he was very upset Huck would do that to him.

Why is Jim superstitious-
I believe Jim is superstitious because he was very uneducated and back then they had no idea and actual scientific reasons for things. so they had to come up with ideas and story's to explain things. That's why I think Jim is very superstitious.

Apologizing to Jim-
This line tells us that Huck was nervous to talk to Jim and apologize. At this time slaves were never right and never deserved to be apologized to. It was like their feelings didn't matter at all. Since Huck was raised this way it was a big deal to apologize to Jim but it tells us that Huck is better than society and sees thru what everyone else thinks, and was caring and knew that it really upset Jim who was a true friend of his.

Giving Jim up-
It is so hard for Huck to give Jim up. First of all Jim is one of Hucks true friends. If he were to give him up he would loose one of his best friends and just straight up break the promises that Jim and Huck have said to each other. When the men come over to the raft, since Huck is very smart and thinks quick on his feet, he told then men that its his family and that they have small pox so the men back off fearing infection. The men give Huck 40 dollars in gold. Huck feels bad for doing it Because he lied.

Chapters 17-21
Describe the Grangerford Family-
The Grangerford family is a very rich family and each of the children even have their own slaves. There are 5 children, 6 children if you include the one daughter named Emmeline who is dead. The family is pretty goofy because they have poems and artwork about people who died but it is special to the family. The Dad named Colonel Grangerford is very warm heated and easy going. Which I would not expect having a family like his. Their family is in a feud with the Shepherdson's which explains why they were so passionate when they thought Huck was a Shepherdson. Buck who is the youngest tried to shoot Harney Shepherdson but missed, although he doesn't know that Harney and his older sister Sophia would soon run off together because they were in love. Two of the Grangerfords had a gun fight with the Shepherson's and both of the Grangerford's died. I would describe this family as all over the place and confuseing but their dad doesn't seem like he fits in the rest because of how gentle he is.

Grandgerfords vs the Shepherdsons-
I think that the reason Mark Twain wrote this into the novel was to show what it was like at that time to be a farmer and a rancher. Farmers and ranchers had to co-exist in that business although they were also rivals or they clashed. This is the same that the Grangerfords and Shepherdsons were because they had to co-exist in church and then go back to their rivalry. This shows us that at that time these two occupations were very competitive with each other and they were competing for the same customers.

Narrators perspective on Finn's story-
in the end of chapter 18 when Huck tells us this he says it because he was still upset and in shock about the two Grangerfords dying. Although he hadn't been with them long he very much liked the family and had become friends with Buck. He admired the family and enjoyed their genuine household and very gentle and kind father. Maybe that was because his father was never like that. The narrator's perspective plays a huge role because you feel like you are really talking to him or that he is talking to you. He talks to you like a friend and you can tell that he was still grieving the loss of his friends. It makes us empathize more than we would normally if a third party was telling us.

King and the duke-
The king and the duke are 2 people that Finn and Jim picked up along the way on this raft. The older man make Huck and Jim believe that he is the long lost son of King Louis XVI of France while the younger man makes them believe that hes is an impoverished English duke. Huck soon realized that they were impostors but he didn't say anything because he wanted to prevent "quarrels" or he didn't want there to be tension between them so he just didn't say anything.

Problems with the dukes solution-
The dukes idea is to have Jim on there raft and when people ask there going to say that hes there prisoner so other people wont ask questions and everything. I spot a couple of problems with his "solution". I think that someone in a higher power will come in and actually take Jim to a prison and Jim will be gone, or that Jim will be found and taken back to his owner because he is still a runaway slave.

Chapters 22-26
The end of chapter 22-
On the handbill at the bottom the biggest line of all read, "LADIES AND CHILDREN ARE NOT ADMITTED" The reason why this would work to get more people attending the play is because if there is a play that is only for men there might be scenes in it that aren't appropriate for the women and children. The men thought it would be a time just for them to take a break from their family and that if the show was only for men it must be better than any other show. So it was kinda giving men a higher place.

The chapter 23-
A- The reason that Huck doesn't tell Jim about it is that they had already talked about it and Jim trusted them and thought they weren't con-men. The conversation would have been pointless and could have ended in an argument. Also, Huck didn't want Jim to feel stupid or gullible again like the time when he lied about the dream. It was just for the better good of everyone.
B- When Huck says this he means that the reason they couldn't tell them from the real kind is because they had never met or even seen a duke or king in person. They would have no idea what they act like, look like, or talk like. Also, The King and The Duke were very good at tricking people and Huck and Jim weren't very eduacated. They could be classified as gullible. This is what Huck meant.

Question 3-
When they were in town the King was told that a man had died. He was rich and they were waiting for hit two brothers to show up because everything in his will was left to them. One brother was deaf. The next day the King and the Duke impersonated the two brothers. The Duke acted as the deaf one. They showed up pretending that they were his brothers and they cried and put on a whole act. They walked up the mountain to the home of the deceased with town folks allowing them to cry on their shoulders. Huck is so ashamed because he can't believe they would actually do this. It was horrible. Also, his real brothers were out there somewhere. This tells us that Huck does not support what they are doing and he is a very sympathetic person. He would never want someone to do to him what the Kind and Duke just did to that family.

The doctor-
One of the main things that the doctor noticed showing that they were a fraud was their British accents. The doctor said that they were some of the worst he had ever heard and that you could tell they were fake. He also mentioned how one day they would think of what they just did and get sick, the same feeling Huck has been experiencing the whole time. The King and The Duke knew nothing about Mr. Wilks and who he was as a person. If they were truly brothers they would have had more knowledge.

They aint leavin-
The King convinces the Duke to stay through the whole night until they steal all of the other properties. The Duke wanted to play it safe but the King wanted everything. He is very greedy and wants everything he can possibly get. They stayed in order to acquire all of the family's properties.

Chapters 27-30
Why they didn't bury people-
The act of guarding a dead person from time of death until time of burial is known as Shemira. The main reason that they had a guard or multiple guards was to protect the body from rodents and insects eating the body. It was done out of respect for the dead because they shouldn't be abandoned before they go into their new "home" in the ground. Essentially, it was just to protect the body until it was buried.

Huck doesn't want to hurt Mary Jane-
We once again were reminded of the kind heart that Huck has. Huck could not bear to see Mary Jane as upset that she was when she was reacting to the slaves family being split a part. She was extremely upset and Huck had noticed this. He also knew she was struggling with the death because he saw her crying alone at night by the casket. He wanted to make her feel better so he told her that the slaves will not be separated forever. This shows us how nice he is and empathetic. It isn't the first time we have seen this.

Methods to find a fraud-
When the two real brothers arrived it caused an issue and the lawyer decided to preform a writing test to see who the frauds were. He had the four men all sign a paper to compare those signatures to past letters. The test showed that the King and the Duke were frauds but the King complained to the lawyer saying it wasn't accurate since the real Harvey's hand was broken, and his brother serves as a scribe to him, they wouldn't be able to prove who is who. Then the real Harvey says that he knows of a tattoo on his brothers chest that no one else would know of. He also says that the man who dressed the body would back him up on it. Both the King and Harvey give detailed descriptions of the tattoo and the undertaker who dressed the dead man reveals the truth that he had no tattoo. It surprised everyone. They decide to dig up the body to see which is right and then find the bag of $6000.

Chapters 31-35
Hucks Prayer-
Huck was wanting to pray for forgiveness about helping Jim escape. In that time it was illegal and not a good thing to do to help a black person escape it's owner. Although, it wasn't just any slave it was Jim. Huck became very close with Jim and couldn't help himself to do anything but help Jim. He knew it was wrong and tried to pray for forgiveness but decided he didn't really want forgiveness because he didn't believe that he did anything wrong. It was just wrong by society.

Tearing up the letter-
Huck decided to write a letter to Tom telling him to let Miss Watson know where Jim is at. He wrote the letter but then in the midst of praying he reminisced on how kind-hearted and good of a friend Jim had been to him. He then decided he would rather take the chance and go to hell in order to stand by Jim. He tore up the letter so that Miss Watson would never know where Jim is and he wasn't going to send it anyway. This is extremely important and significant because Huck is showing how he does not side with the rest of society and racist actions.

Stealing Jim-
I don't think I would word it as Huck was disappointed in Tom but more that he was surprised and caught of guard by the new actions Tom is displaying. Tom Sawyer went from being a guy who wanted to create a gang to steal and kill people to helping a slave escape. It may not seem like a big deal but then it was crazy. Also, Tom always did what he thought was cool and seeked approval from others. This new behavior of him going against societies normalities was surprising to Huck. I think it is sad that it was such a big deal to help someone just because their skin color was different.

Huck says two things-
Huck is talking about the fact that it was partially his fault that the King and the Duke got caught and tied to a rail by their feet. Even though they were not good people he still felt like he was their friend and shows his empathetic side once again. Huck is saying that no matter what actually happened your conscience will always rule over the truth. It is a mental thing. What ever you think you did wrong and keep telling yourself that then you will truly start to believe it. This is how I think of it at least.

Breaking Jim free-
Tom and Huck chose to free Jim in a much more difficult way than was necessary. Or should I just say Tom decided this. Huck proposed his plan but Tom responded back saying it was too simple and, "wouldn't draw anymore attention than breaking into a soap factory." They decided to add more style and if Tom was going to help steal a slave he had to do it with his special flare.
